Darkhorse publishes Landscape, the international journal of the Landscape Institute, four times a year. We manage the whole process from content creation through to distribution and delivery, and we work hard to ensure that each issue has features that make it unique, and that every issue is beautifully styled and on brand.
We created an interactive website to showcase the Institute’s Journal, which is live on-line fourteen days after the hard copy is delivered to members. We produce a bi-weekly update email for members which delivers communications, drives users to the website and creates user data that is analysed for future use as well as publishing a quarterly newsletter in digital and print formats.
When we took over publication of the Journal, we introduced significant design and print savings. The client has used the money saved in two ways:
- Firstly, to fund enhancements to the current journal – it now has more pages, a higher quality cover and the most recent issue included a pull out illustration of the history of urban parks that was featured in the Telegraph. We have improved the quality of the publication so much that, in the words of Tim Waterman (Honorary Editor) “It feels like a gift from us to the membership, and... it is beautiful.” And this did not cost the client any more.
- Secondly, the savings made have been sufficient to fund our development and ongoing running costs of an app to publish the Journal via ‘Newsstand’ the apple application that enables users to download an electronic version of the Journal to an iPad. The Institute are delighted to have modernised their Journal in this way.
Just two years into the project, the Journal was shortlisted for the prestigious ‘International Building Press Magazine of the Year Award’ – the first time in the Institute’s history that it has been recognised by the awards.
