You can’t understand the history of England just by reading about it. Our task was to help English Heritage bring history to life at Belsay Hall.

For 600 years a hairy, naked beast and his hairy, naked wife have watched over and protected Belsay’s famous Middleton family. Our identity and interpretive design encourage him to step out of his shadowy, mythical world so that visitors can meet him in a new display located in Belsay’s beautiful Pillar Hall.

History is a source of wonderful stories, and the historic environment at Belsay Hall allowed us to be imaginative with graphic panels across the site introducing visitors to the Wildman and his habitat, and encouraging them to explore the buildings and gardens, imagine his habitat and find him in his many guises.

Carefully developing the design and layout of the exhibition to fit with the character of the building and grounds, we made use of the spaces to ensure all fitting adhered to the strict protective building regulations.
